Large load connections

You may need a large load connection if you:

  • Require a distribution system connection of 5,000 kW or more.
  • Require a unique or specialized distribution system connection.
  • Have one or more large pieces of equipment in your facility at or over 2,000 HP.
  • Build, own, operate and maintain your own electrical substation and transmission line connected to our transmission system.

Select a type of large load connection

Major distribution connections (12 kV to 35 kV)

These are connections to our medium voltage system for loads greater than 5,000 kW in a 25kV service area, or 2,500 kW in a 12 kV service area.

Examples of major distribution connections include:

  • Multi-phased, mixed-use developments.
  • Large commercial developments.
  • Light industrial developments.
  • Loads such as cannabis, data centres, and hydrogen and transportation electrification.

We extend the distribution system along public property to a primary service at your site where you provide your own transformation.

Transmission connections (69 kV to 287 kV)

These are connections to our highest-voltage systems. If you’re looking for a connection over 35 kV and plan to build, own, operate and maintain your own electrical substation and transmission line, this is the option for you.

Examples of transmission connections include:

  • Industrial developments such as mining, oil and gas, and LNG facilities.
  • Large-scale, energy-intensive operations such as data centres and hydrogen facilities.
  • Other energy-intensive developments near a BC Hydro transmission facility.

You would typically extend the connection from your transmission substation out to our transmission system.
