BC Hydro Electricity Consumption Check

BC Hydro provides energy efficient upgrade rebates in the Home Renovation Rebate program to customers who have high bills from heating their homes with electric heat. Rebate eligible upgrades include insulation, heat pumps, windows and doors. Heat pump water heaters are exempt from the minimum electricity consumption requirement.

Homes heated by electricity use electric baseboards, heat pumps or electric furnaces to heat their home. Using a natural gas fireplace or wood heating will reduce a home’s electricity consumption.

Eligible electrically heated homes must be a primary residence that is 12 months or older, include single family dwelling, duplex, row home or townhouses and mobile homes on permanent foundations. Apartments and condos are not eligible for rebates.

You've confirmed you heat your home primarily with electricity. Use this quick check to allow you to confirm if your electrically heated home meets the minimum consumption required to be eligible for rebates before you start any upgrades.

Enter your BC Hydro account number and home square footage. Your home’s electricity consumption is compared to the average electricity consumption of electrically heated homes of the same size, over the past three years. Unsure of the square footage of your home, find out by checking the BC Assessment property search.

The BC Hydro Electricity Consumption check includes a 5% allowance for homes that are close but do not meet the minimum consumption requirement.

Rebates provided by BC Hydro to customers who heat their homes primarily with electric baseboards, heat pumps or electric furnaces must meet a minimum electricity consumption per year.

BC Hydro rebates are targeted at customers who have the highest bills relative to the size of their home and provide significant opportunity to save electricity. Homes must be a primary residence that is 12 months older.
